Caring for Swiss pine: how to keep it beautiful for years

Swiss pine is a fine material, valued for its natural properties and its pleasant scent. To preserve the beauty and longevity of your Swiss pine pieces, they want to be looked after properly. Here are a few tips on how to care for them.

Untreated Swiss pine

Swiss pine products should not be treated with oil or varnish. Only untreated wood can release its essential oil, pinosylvin, freely. Although untreated Swiss pine is a little more delicate than a varnished surface, small marks are easily dealt with: simply lay a damp cloth over the dent or scratch, or wipe the dirt away with water.

Removing stains

Should a larger stain appear in the wood, there are two ways to go about it. You can wait — Swiss pine keeps working within itself, and marks often fade on their own. Alternatively the wood can be sanded down by hand or with a sander. If needed, a specialist will do this for you.

Protection from sudden changes in temperature

Swiss pine is a living material. To keep it from warping, protect it from large and abrupt changes in temperature. We therefore recommend not placing Swiss pine pieces next to stoves or radiators, as the wood may otherwise dry out.
