Swiss pine oil & scents

There are several ways to bring the scent of Swiss stone pine into a home. The 100 % pure essential pine oil is obtained from the wood and branches by steam distillation; a few drops are enough for one room.

If you prefer to do without oil, there are scent cubes of solid Swiss pine or the reed diffuser, which releases the fragrance gradually. When the scent fades, light sanding is enough for the cubes; for the diffuser there are replacement reeds.

Watch the label when buying essential oils: only a bottle that names the botanical species — here Pinus cembra — and the method of extraction is genuinely pure. Fragrance oils are usually synthetic.

How many drops of Swiss pine oil does a room need?

Three to five drops are enough for a scent cube or bowl, two to four drops per 100 ml of water for an ultrasonic diffuser. More oil does not give a nicer scent, only a sharp one.

What does “100 % pure” mean?

That the oil is obtained solely by steam distillation from the plant material, with nothing added or diluted. The label then also carries the botanical name — for Swiss pine, Pinus cembra. Fragrance or aroma oils, by contrast, are usually synthetic.

How long does a scent cube keep its fragrance?

Solid Swiss pine keeps its scent for years. If it fades it is not gone — light sanding with fine paper opens the surface and brings it back. Alternatively add a few drops of Swiss pine oil.
