Swiss pine shavings & flakes

Shavings and curls come off the lathe and the plane — none of it is wasted. As a filling for cushions, in a fabric sachet in the wardrobe or as a fragrance in the car, they do the same work as the solid wood.

Curls are long and springy and give off the most fragrance, which makes them right for open bowls. Flakes are shorter and settle more densely — the better filling for cushions. First choice is even and light, second choice slightly coarser and cheaper; inside a cushion that makes no difference.

As a guide: a 40 x 40 cm cushion takes about 700 to 900 grams of flakes.

Which form suits which purpose, and how much a cushion takes, is explained in Shavings, curls and flakes compared.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between curls and flakes?
Curls are long, twisted planer shavings — loose, strongly scented and ideal for open bowls. Flakes are shorter and more even, they settle more densely and are therefore the right filling for cushions.
Is second choice worth it?
For cushions, yes. Second choice is the same wood, only less even and with slightly more dark parts. The scent is practically the same — the difference is visual, and inside a cushion nobody sees it.
How many shavings does a cushion need?
A 40 × 40 cm cushion takes roughly 700 to 900 grams of flakes, depending on how firm you want it. For a 25 cm decorative bowl about 100 grams of curls are enough.
